What a sweet, challenging, busy, surprising, fun, remarkable year with this little guy! Who would have thought a year ago that on his first birthday, we'd be celebrating in Wyoming - where we LIVE - and it's snowing!
Our sweet little guy has brown/hazel eyes, strawberry/dirty blond hair, four teeth, and looks so much like his sister - though he has a little more hair, his ears lay a little more flat, and he's not as round in the cheeks.
Emery and Everett at one year:
This month Everett has learned how to climb! He can climb onto the couch and onto the ottoman that is supposed to block him in a play area. Now he can escape! He seems to understand how to get down by putting his feet down first and sliding on his belly, but he's certainly not quite reliable at it yet.
He can turn from one edge of the couch and take a bit of a step and grab the other edge of the couch. Or let go, take one step, and go down on his knees. He seems to believe walking is not very appealing, perhaps since he's so fast as crawling, and he doesn't want to hold your hands and try to take steps. As few times he's been standing at the couch playing with something, and let go with both hands, standing on his own for a few seconds.
When we ask Everett if he's hungry, he pats his belly and sometimes gives the sign for milk (or he's waving - not sure). He will also say "ett, ett, ett" (eat eat eat?). He waves goodbye, even to an empty living room when we're going to bed/nap (Emery did this too), or to Blake and Emery in the morning, but usually after the door closes. Today he waved while they were putting on their shoes and it sounded like he said "buh" (bye).
Yesterday he heard a power tool buzzing loudly outside and he said: rrrrrrrr. So maybe we can ask "what does the drill say?" in addition to "what does the lion say?" -- it's all about asking the right questions!
When the microwave beeps, Everett says "nah nah nah!" It's possible I accidentally taught him this when I've told the microwave to "stop stop stop" (its beeps are very persistent). I must watch what I say!
Last week, we transitioned Everett from an arms-in sleeper (Woombie) to an arms-out sleeper (Halo sleep sack). The first two nights, he stood up and cried for nearly 45 minutes until I zipped him back in the woombie and he fell asleep immediately. The third night, he laid down, cried a bit, and fell asleep! The fourth night and on, he laid right down and fell asleep! It feels amazing to me after those first two nights.
On Saturday (10/6), we had a small birthday party for Everett with Blake's folks and brother. Everett was under the weather, and the party hat and cake were not well received; he cried. A little while later, we did a do over with the cake and he made a fun mess.
Today Everett is one year old! What a completely unexpected surprise this guy continues to be! We love you, cutie pie!
The black cowboy hat was Blake's when he was a baby.
Everett can't quite stand on his own yet.
